Chokwe Lumumba, the attorney who represented Buju Banton before being named mayor of Jackson, Mississippi has died.
Mr. Lumumba who was a prominent attorney and human rights advocate died Tuesday at the age of 66. City officials said Chokwe Lumumba died at St. Dominic Hospital. A cause of death was not immediately clear.
Olimata Taal who was one of Mr. Lumumba’s mentees is saddened by what she describes as his sudden passing.
Prior to being appointed Mayor in Mississippi, Chokwe Lumumba advised Buju Banton to seek other legal counsel.
Mr. Lumumba served one term on the City Council and was sworn in as mayor last July.
As an attorney, Chokwe Lumumba represented rapper Tupac and countless others.
